|Sonnet has Thunderbolt certified the eGFX Breakaway box including its power supply, and we cannot recommend changing the power supply. |
Sonnet uses the FSP FSP550-50SGGBA in the Breakaway Box 550.
Sonnet uses the Enermax ERV650SWT SFX 80 Plus Gold in the original Breakaway Box 650. (The newest Breakaway Box 650OC uses an ATX power supply.) Sonnet uses the higher-performance Akasa AK-FN059 fan in Breakaway Box 650.
If you upgrade the power supply and fan, you will have more power available to a graphics card, but you will not alter the upstream power delivery, which is programmed into the unit. Note that upstream power continues to be provided even when the computer is sleeping.

1. The Radeon 5700 and 5700 XT are supported on Windows 10 Build 1809+. Support on macOS requires 10.15.2+
2. Some large gaming versions of Vega 64 and Radeon 5700 XT do not fit in the Breakaway Box. Check the Graphics Card Compatibility pdf for specific model information.
3. The Radeon VII is requires Windows 10 Build 1809+ or macOS 10.14.6+ to work at all, but we don't recommend it. On macOS, the Radeon VII mostly works, but is not officially supported by Apple, AMD, or Sonnet. On macOS or Windows, The Radeon VII fans unnecessarily run at full speed upon sleep or shutdown. To quiet the fans, the user must power down an eGPU chassis with a Radeon VII upon sleep or shutdown.

Note: You may have read that some other manufacturers' external graphics boxes--even some with a higher power supply rating--fail under heavy load with the NVIDIA Titan Xp (Pascal) card. Not so with a Sonnet Breakaway Box. In choosing a power supply, Sonnet carefully considers not only the eGFX Box nominal power rating, but also its instantaneous peak power delivery capability. Sonnet runs many rigorous tests (including the CUDA-Z benchmark, set to Heavy Load Test Mode). The Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Box must pass the most stringent tests before we put it in your hands.

|On newer Gigabyte computers, you have to enable boot ridge 2.0 (Gigabyte) in the BIOS/UEFI.|
\ql On older Gigabyte motherboards, you may need to take these steps to get an eGPU working :
1. Install latest BIOS (e.g. use Gigabyte Q-Flash utility within the BIOS to update via USB-drive)
2. Install latest Thunderbolt firmware (available on Gigabyte.us support site)
3. Uninstall the existing Thunderbolt bus driver, and then install the latest Thunderbolt bus driver.
(We got bus driver version 126.96.36.1995 working,. This is the latest one as of February 2018)
4. Change settings in the system BIOS to allocate enough PCI resources to the Thunderbolt bus.

....Go to "Peripherals" > "Thunderbolt (TM) Configuration" > "ThunderBolt Detachable Graphics Support" > switch to "Enable"
....Increase the following settings to its maximum values:

Many early 4K displays use Multi-Stream Transport (MST) to achieve 4k @ 60Hz. Follow these steps to use the display's built-in controls to enable this feature:
Sharp PN-K321: Choose Menu > Setup > DisplayPort STREAM > MST > SET
ASUS PQ321Q: Choose OSD menu > Setup > DisplayPort Stream
Dell UP2414Q and UP3214Q: Choose Menu > Display Setting > DisplayPort 1.2 > Enable
Panasonic TC-L65WT600: Choose Menu > Display Port Settings > Stream Setting > Auto
Other DisplayPort displays: check with the display manufacturer for compatibility information.
Make sure the HDMI cable you are using is a Premium High-Speed HDMI Cable certified by HDMI.org.
If you are trying to connect at 4k@60Hz via HDMI 2.0, you may have to set the color depth to 8-bit at 4:4:4, 10-bit at 4:2:2, or 12-bit at 4:2:0, or you may exceed the HDMI 2.0 bandwidth. A few 4K TVs (2017 Element Fire TV and 2017 LeEco Super 4, for example) don't support 4K@60Hz@4:4:4 at all.
For connecting to a 4K TV, you may need make a custom color resolution. Set resolution to 3840x2160 at 60Hz and set Timing standard to CVT-RB (reduced blanking). Some TVs require you to turn on "UHD Color" or "Advanced" or "Enhanced" setting manually in the picture settings for the HDMI port.

Display Port signal is not compatible with HDMI.
However, on most modern GPU cards, the DisplayPort output is a Dual mode DisplayPort (DP++), which has the ability to recognize and adjust the signal to HDMI when a passive DP-to-HDMI adapter cable is connected, but only up to a point. If the HDMI monitors you are trying to connect are identical (use identical video signal timings), then you should be able to use passive adapters for all. However, if the monitors are different, then there may be a limit of two special clocks to drive passive DP to HDMI adapters; ergo only two HDMI monitors may be supported with passive adapters; the third and subsequent monitor would need to be native DisplayPort or would need to use an active DP-to-HDMI adapter.
Older generation GPU cards require the use of active DP-to-HDMI adapters on every DP port.
